Books and such...

Okay-- I freely admit that I probably paid for Amazon.com's free upgrade, and the depressing thing is, it feels like I never actually have time to actually READ the things I buy. But, one trip to the john after another, I have wrapped up a few titles here, which I'll share. But I warn you--I read trash. I mean, I read literature at work, and I enjoy my job, but I hate it that reading--what I love--is a job, and so, being perverse and passive aggressive, I rebel by reading...

What I write. I love reading the same dreck I love writing. Sue me. I've said it before--if it makes us respond to the human condition in some way, it's literature. I just like my literature unashamed of it's humanity, that's all. So here, in a nutshell, is the list of what I've been reading...there's probably some blanks there--I forget, uhm, everything if it's not sealed in my head with shower caulk--and it's definitely short for me. I'm still bitter about taking those @#$%ing units during the summer, especially because, since I signed up for them so late, I don't get my pay raise until next year. (yeah yeah--it's my fault...I know it will surprise a lot of you, but I've got this paperwork disability.. Again, it's my suffering paycheck--I just wish I didn't have to suffer the pity of the HR department because they ALL know.)

So, uhm...
The 7th Harry Potter. Duh.
The Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saint Crow--#3, The Devil's Right Hand. (Awesome. I love Tierce Japhrimel--and not just his name.)
The Harry Dresden Series by Jim Butcher-#8. (Gets better every time.)
The "Grave" series by Charlaine Harris--#3. (SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!)
The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris--# 7 (I HATE Quinn. Hate him. LOVE Erick. Love love love.)
Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale
The "Kitty" series by Carrie Vaughn--all three in a row. (Definitely!)
The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward (I read these pretty consecutively, and am now on #5--Love Unbound. Uhm...YEEEEEE freaking HAWWWWWWWWWW. These vampire heroes are hot enough to save a marriage or destroy a convent...yum.)
Low Red Moon by Caitlin Kiernen. (Great Book. I hated it. There's a reason most of my 'horror' is really contemporary urban fantasy in disguise...)
Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay--I'd read his grocery list.
Innocent in Death by J.D. Robb--well, the woman isn't an icon, a success story, and a breathing legend in the publishing industry for nothing, is she?

And I'm looking at this thinking "Is that all? I mean...I've had years where this was a month...hell, I've had years where this was two weeks...and this is like...hell--two, three months?

I mean seriously--I've got four pairs of socks working, one pair of mittens, a scarf and a shawl, and none of them are even close to being finished.

What the hell am I doing with my time?

  1. Thanks for sharing the book list. My daughter and I shamelessly revel in many of the same reading choices. I'm in the middle of Lover Unbound and am returning to it immediately after this post. I'll second your comment on that one!

  2. What's wrong with Quinn? I love him. Eric is meh. You might want to try the Stephanie Plum stories by Janet Evanovich. I think One for the Money is the first. They are not fantasy but mystery and out of all the mysterise I have read, they are up there with their entertainment value. I loved Innocent in Death. I wish more of her works were available as downloads because that is where most of my reading comes in nowadays. I have what many would consider execrable taste in my reading but I read to be entertained not educated. Educated is what I do and read at work. My time is for fun.

  3. (I'm actually waiting to read 12 and 13 from the Stephanie Plum series--I really do love them. But I still don't like Quinn--sorry. Eric is just very "Me Viking, you hot chick, and I'm down with that...)

  4. Husband and I laughed out loud about the GG Kay book. Other than HP I haven't read any of this list, well I haven't read Ysabel yet either though we have a copy. I'm going to start The Wandering Fire soon. I'd read more if I didn't knit ... oi

  5. I love the way you spend your time. And when do you get the time to read? I've been plowing through The Architecture of Happiness for a month and it's a skinny book. OK, I DID take a break for that wonderful book you wrote . . .

  6. Pesky kids, eating up mom's reading and knitting time. Don't forget you've been doing a little writing, too.

  7. Like the book list - have you got on to Kim Harris there's a chick who rocks (and then falls in salt water!!)
You're rigth about GGK - have read the Fionavar Tapestry probably 20 times since I bought it back in 1988! - Try an excursion through Patricia McKillip and Robyn McKinley - especially Sunshine if you like the odd vampire.....
(I do love Quinn - mmmm tigers..)

  8. I'm right with you -- Eric RAH. Quinn, if we must, until we get back to eric....I'll read anything that woman writes -- I went back and got all the older stuff too, though it's straight mystery.

JRWard yum yum...when I have nothing new handy, I re-read her and you, all the time...What IS wrong with me! I think I've re-read each of your series' 5 times...You're both in my bathroom shelf (see below)

I once decided that my summer break would be a reading summer, all else put on hold (I have no kids, of course, or I couldn't say this...tho' have a mate...) I finished 77 books in 2 months. Ah, the glory days. Not been able to be so indulgent since.

I too have discovered the 'joy' of hour long toilet trips to get some peace-- students mother mate grading need some quiet 'gotta use the toilet, honey.' mate replies, 'see you in an hour'...love that he's so patient. Sometimes if its music I'm after, I take my ipod and a great pair of noise cancelling headphones, lay down in a darkened room, listen to music and create scenarios in my head (fantasies, anyone?) for an hour...or two...or three.
